Week 2 has been another great week of learning across the school as students continue to be settled and following the 4R’s in and outside the classroom. Our school expectations are that we are Respectful, Responsible, Resilient and Ready for Learning, these expectations are consistent across all settings in the school the students will hear the same message from each staff member.
This week the students in Year 2-6 students enjoyed an extra Physical Education lesson as Athletics Australia led an Athletics to the Outback session. The feedback was very positive from the children as they enjoyed being challenged while being active.
On Tuesday and Thursday welcomed the Kindy children from C&K Weipa to the Come and Try sessions to explore life in Prep and experience some of the learning that takes place. Next week we welcome the Kindy children from C&K Napranum for the same experience.
This coming Thursday 28th August there will be a P&F Meeting at 7pm. All parents are welcome to attend and give suggestions on how to spend some of the school's funds. The upcoming School Dance and Father’s Day Colour Run will also be on the agenda.
Wishing you all a restful weekend and best of luck all those students and parents who are participating in the Weipa Running Festival on Sunday.
Sunday’s Gospel Reading Luke 11:1-3 Jesus Teaches the Disciples to Pray
This Sunday the Gospel reading from the book of Luke, presents Jesus as a teacher, teaching the disciples how to pray. As Jesus taught on the mountainside; many people gathered to hear Him. Jesus taught that those who follow Him should never do good things just to call attention to themselves. The good things they do should be done in secret, just between them and God. God sees what we do in secret, and He will reward those things. It is also through this Scripture that we hear the words used in the traditional prayer, the Our Father also known as the Lord’s Prayer. Jesus reminds us that prayer is the time you spend being honest and real with God and we don’t need fancy elaborate words to speak with him. Jesus gives a perfect example of how to pray using the Lord’s Prayer.
Catholic Education Week Queensland
Next week Catholic Schools across Queensland will celebrate Catholic Education Week. The theme for this year is Communities of Faith Hope and Love. St Joseph’s will be celebrating the wonderful community we belong to Week 4. Please join us for Just Dance event on Thursday 4th August from 5:30pm.

Each recipient is chosen because of the way they live out the values of humility, justice and compassion in our school. We look forward to you joining us for these events.

SEL Wellbeing Survey
The children at St, Joesph’s Parish School Weipa have been invited to take part in a survey about student wellbeing and mental health from the between 01/08/2022 and 19/08/2022. The survey will be completed online during school hours and contains between 25-57 questions (depending on the age of your child) and will take 10- 15 minutes to complete.
This annual survey is being issued to all students in the Diocese of Cairns by the Student Wellbeing and Diversity directorate of Catholic Education Services. The survey aims to gather student opinions about aspects of the school that relate to supporting student wellbeing and mental health.
What is the purpose of the survey? The survey will provide schools with student opinions on what the school is doing well and what they can improve to better promote and support student wellbeing and mental health. Long term this survey may be used to track student wellbeing and mental health over a period of time.

Our little library is buzzing along with many new books coming into our library each term. Our amazing school officers try and get these out quickly so our students have a diverse range of books to read. In particular our up year level readers. Our termly subscriptions for Literacy Pro delivers a great mix of fiction books with an occasional non fiction book. Students often look in the ‘New Book’ section or our wire racks first before searching the shelves. Students are always welcome to make suggestions and we try our best to meet those requests. Please feel free to pass on requests to our school secretary email.
Leading up to the Amazing Race during Book Week/Science Week we will be looking at some of the books off the shortlist by the CBCA (Children’s Book Council of Australia). Students will have to recall some details from the books and use this knowledge during the amazing race. Students will start looking at these books next week with up to 6 books before the Amazing Race. Look our for some pictures in the next fortnightly newsletter or Facebook posts.

We have had a wonderful start to Term 3! Over the last couple of weeks, we have welcomed visits from the staff and children at Cape Kids and C&K Weipa to our Prep classroom. During these times, we have shared our learning experiences through songs, games, activities, and explicit teaching and (most importantly!) had lots of fun.
In preparation for this week’s 100 days of learning celebration, we have read stories all about 100 and counted, counted, counted! Our 100-days at school celebration with the Year 1 students and teachers was a big success. The students were engaged in learning about 100 in a variety of ways during the rotational activities. It was also very exciting to move into different classrooms as we changed activities!
In English we are continuing to work on our letters and sounds knowledge and building our writing skills from words to sentences.
Just a couple of friendly reminders…
- Please return completed homework in the clear plastic homework folder on Mondays.
- Library day is also on Mondays.
Thank you!
Stephanie
Hello Parents and Caregivers and welcome to Term 3!
All year we have been keeping track of how many days we have been at school. This week we were all very excited to FINALLY celebrate 100 days of school with all of the Year One and Prep classes. We participated in a range of different learning activities across the classrooms with the theme of 100 such as:
- playing race to 100 on a board game
- creating cup towers with 100 cups
- counting trail mixes with cereal in groups of 10 (that we got to eat at the end!)
- decorating 100 days of school crowns
- finger painting gum balls, and
- drawing what we might look like when we are 100.
The students were invited to dress up with a theme of “100” and we had some amazing looking grandpas and grandads as well as some dresses and shirts with 100 “things” on them.
It was a fantastic celebration that will surely be remembered over the years. I loved seeing the students so engaged and focused during their groups and being great role models to the Prep students.
Kind Regards,
Tash Tapper & Kate Backhouse

Hello Year 2 Families!
We have had a great first two weeks of Term 3.
Over the past week we have been learning all about calendars and the months of year. We now know the 12 months in a year and the order they go in. We used a song to help us remember, if you ask a Year 2 student, I’m sure they would be able to sing it to you.
We were lucky enough Athletics Far North Queensland visit us this week and Year 2 had some great fun!
Here are some pictures.
What is up in year 3? Literally what is in the sky?
Do you know how day and night occur with the help of the Sun?
Year 3 have learnt in Science this term that the Sun is the centre of the solar system. Although it looks like the Sun is moving across the sky to create the sunrise and sunset – the isn’t moving at all! It’s the Earth that moves! The Earth orbits the Sun, and the Earth also rotates on its axis on a tilt. It takes a full 24 hours to complete a full rotation on the Earth axis. As the Earth rotates the side of the Earth that is facing the sun receives daylight while the side that is facing away from the Sun experiences night. Look at how year 3 can represent their knowledge as scientific annotated diagrams.
Hello families of Year 4,
Thank you for a great start back to school! Students have settled in well to routines, and we have done a run through of the 4R’s and how we can be Responsible, Respectful, Resilient and Ready for Learning around all areas of the school.
This week’s PB4L focus was ‘Raising our hands to speak’, and we spoke about the right times to talk in class and how we make conversations.
Year 4 were lucky enough to participate in some additional sporting events over the past 2 weeks. We had a visit from the QLD Bulls Masters and attended the Athletics in the Outback as supported by Rio Tinto.
In English this term, we are looking at persuasive texts and the strong ways we can persuade our readers to feel, do or think something. We will dive deeper into modal words, rhetorical questions and writing persuasive paragraphs that have structure and meaning.
For the early parts of this term, students will continue to look at measurement and geometry, and specifically length, mass, capacity, volume, area and perimeter.
Some gentle reminders for Term 3:
- The Arts is Thursday with Miss Libby
- AUSLAN is Thursday with Mrs Gear
- Health is Friday with Mrs O’Brien
- Music is Friday with Mrs Turner
- PE is Friday with Miss Libby (sports uniform)
- Library return/borrowing is Friday
- Homework is given Monday and returned Friday
Warm Regards,
Emily Ridgley
News from Years 5/6 - Senior Learning Hub
The word on the street is that the Senior Learning Hub students are busy learning about garden designs this term. We have created a Google Site which we will be adding all of our English produce fact files, as well as any extra information we think is relevant to show our understanding. We already have reviewed the life cycle of a plant and identified some of the environmental features that may impact produce from growing.
Our vocabulary for Business and Economics is growing with the seniors' defining terminology as well as providing examples to show their understanding. We look forward to conducting our experiments next week and creating data displays to identify the impacts of environmental features on plant growth. In Maths we have had a focus on finance with students looking at discounts and sale prices added to items that they could potentially add to their garden design.
Judaism has been a focus during Religion where students have identified beliefs, holidays and what Jewish people consider sacred. Students have made the connection that the first five books from both our bible and their bible. The seniors have also been busy practicing for the Just Dance concert in Week 4. Everything is coming together nicely and they will shine on the night.
We have changed back to homework and library borrowing to Fridays again this term. Students are encouraged to bring devices home to charge at least twice a week, so they have them ready for learning.

Athletics Carnival Term 2 Our results for the carnival were very close. Every point matters, so every child participating in an event matters. The House Spirit Award and random points awarded all contribute to the final point tally. Again, thanks to all who made our carnival a great success.

Qld Bulls visit last week Last week, players from the Qld Bulls in conjunction with Crimestoppers visited the students. They talked about the importance of striving hard and setting goals. Crimestoppers discussed safety awareness in Weipa and handed out a pretty good sample bag of goodies. Some of our students went on to attend the clinic that afternoon and then play in the Saturday competition. |

P ED SKILLS TERM 3 The focus for P-2 will be skipping. We will build endurance and fitness, learn tricks and use locomotor skills at the same time. They will also be improving throwing and catching skills in the form of different games weekly. Yr 3-6 will also be skipping weekly. Their main focus will be catching, batting and fielding skills when playing team games like Throwball, T ball and softball. Working as a team to build trust in each other’s skills will be an important part of these games. |

The ARTS – DANCE
The students are very excited about our DANCE OFF! Show which is only less than 2 weeks away. Each class will showcase their signature dance they learnt last term and have been practising and refining the last few weeks.
Skills that we have focused on are: timing, keeping in sync, learning the beat of the music, transitioning into the dance, refining dance steps, final poses/stances. Every student is giving it their best shot!
The improvement in their movement skills has been an absolute pleasure to see, and more importantly the growth in self confidence in so many students!
The Dances are listed below.
Keep dancing kids! Can’t wait for the night to see our students shine.
