Newsletter Term 3 Week 2
Catholic Education Week in 2021 will be celebrated in Queensland next week. The theme for 2021 celebrations will be A Spirited Tomorrow. This theme acknowledges the long tradition of Catholic education and its continued relevance in preparing students for the future.
Celebrated annually in week 3 of term 3, Catholic Education Week is an opportunity for all 309 Catholic schools in Queensland to celebrate and promote their distinctive mission and ethos.
This week we have taken the opportunity to promote the special ethos of Catholic schools and to highlight the great things that take place in Catholic schools every day.
The theme for this year’s celebrations is: A Spirited Tomorrow. At St Joseph’s we strive to make a difference in the lives of those in our school and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.
What is our Catholic School difference?
- Christ-centred school that strives to follow the path of Jesus by living out the Gospel values not only in words but most importantly in actions.
- That means we are an inclusive school. We invite families from all backgrounds or faith traditions, who are committed to and supportive of the mission of Catholic education to join St Joseph’s.
- At St Joseph’s every child is known, valued and cared for. We are committed to the academic success and wellbeing of each of you and this is what makes St Joseph’s a great place to be at.
We are so proud of the way our St Joseph’s community strives to live out the Gospel values not only in words but most importantly in actions. This was so clearly demonstrated at the many events we had this week.
Fr Dariusz and many families joined us to celebrate a special ‘Spirit of St Joseph’ Mass on Tuesday and announce the Spirit of St Joseph’ recipients. During Catholic Education Week we take the opportunity to acknowledge a student from each class who best shows generous, loving service to others, in the manner of St. Joseph. Each recipient is chosen because of the way they live out the values of humility, justice and compassion in our school.
Congratulations: Sharli Wallace Yr 6
Antonia Sebasio Yr 5

Parx Hall Prep
Prep enrolments continue to grow for 2022. We still have some spaces available. If you have friends that are considering Prep next year, please get them to contact the school for an appointment. Enrolment interviews for new families will take place in week 7.
As we are anticipating that there will continue to be strong demand for placements within our Prep groups for 2022, it is important that applications are received by the school as soon as possible.
Please note that if you have a sibling of a current St Joseph’s student you will also need to complete an enrolment application for your child for Prep 2022.
Book Week - Heads Up!
The theme for Book Week this year is Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds. During Book Week we will again be having a dress up parade. The students have been asked to pick a book from one of these themes and bring the book along with them. Book Week is in week 7 and the date of the parade will be announced in the near future.
The theme is very broad and can encompass a huge variety of books. Here are just a few suggestions:
Old Worlds (Historical) - Ancient Egypt, Knights, Dinosaurs, World War I and II.
New Worlds (Futuristic) - Space Station, Science Fiction, Future Technology, Robots.
Other Worlds (Fantasy) - Fairies, Harry Potter, Aliens, Dragons.
We encourage you not to spend a lot of money on the costume but use what you have at home, go to the second-hand shop, or have fun creating a costume from recycled materials.
PB4L - Positive Behaviour for Learning
At St Jospeh’s we recognise that our diverse group of students have all had different life experiences and will bring various levels of social and academic skills to all aspects of schooling. We have identified the following school wide expectations to teach and promote our high standards of responsible behaviour:

- Be Ready for Learning
These expectations provide a reference point to all staff and students both in and outside the classroom. Clear expectations promotes ownership of behaviour which leads to greater development of lifelong skills such as self-discipline and respect for ourselves and others.

Be Responsible
Responsibility is exhibited in such conduct as:
- Follow instructions the first time
- Interact positively with people
- Report any problems immediately
- Be a good role model for others
- Keep all areas neat and tidy
- Be prepared for class by going to the toilet and getting a drink before the bell
- Use your walking feet.
Be Resilient
Resilience is exhibited in such conduct as:
- Waiting patiently
- Using the S.T.E.P problem solving strategies when problems arise
- Accepting responsibility when corrected and willingly apologise
- Using positive self-talk
- Persisting with challenging tasks
- Remaining calm in challenging situations
- Bouncing back to work or play
Be Ready for Learning
Learning is exhibited in such conduct as:
- Asking for help when needed
- Willingly participate and contribute to class learning
- Being on time for each class and activity
- Having all equipment for learning out and ready
- Aiming to achieve your best
- Taking pride in everything you do
- Positively engaging in all activities
- Appreciating differing opinions
- Following instructions
Through the use of consistent and clear language all our students become confident naming the 4R’s and are continually acknowledgement for their positive behaviour at St Joseph's.

Hello families of Year 1,

We’ve been talking about Our Families this week, next week were talking about our home. Feel free to send photos via email or Seasaw for your child to talk about during Show and Share.
Across maths this Term, our class will be looking into Number. This week our focus has been skip counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s.
Gentle reminders:

Hello families of Year 2,
We have been straight back into learning this term with lots of different areas to cover. We have been targeting our reading so far, with Instructional and Guided Reading groups. We are improving in our word recognition and fluency!
Across maths this term, students will be looking at telling time. We have all made our own clocks that we are going to use to recognise o’clock, half-past and quarter past/to. This is sometimes a complex topic to comprehend, so I ask that when you child is at home they practice telling time – both analogue and digital. It’s is a great little way to keep the mind thinking!
Gentle Reminders:
- Homework is given Monday and returned Friday
- Library returning and borrowing is Friday. I ask that if your child has any outstanding books, that they bring them back next Friday.
- Health and PE is Friday
- AUSLAN is Thursday
Kind Regards,
Emily
Welcome back to Term 3! This is my first week teaching at St. Joseph’s and I have enjoyed getting to know the Year 3 class.
Year 3 has started a new class novel, “The Faraway Tree” by Enid Blyton which has captured students’ interest. This novel is filled with many mysterious characters, which the students have enjoyed reading about.
In Writing, we have learned about the purpose and structure of procedural texts. In the coming weeks, we will explore the type of language used in procedures.
In Maths, we have looked at repeated addition, multiplication and units of measurement. This week, Year 3 has enjoyed learning about length, capacity and mass.
In Science, students have learned about the Earth’s rotation and orbit and how this causes night and day. Year 3 has a keen interest in the solar system and have been engaged in a research task on the Planets.
In Geography, students read the book “Are We There Yet?” by Alison Lester and labelled a map of Australia with the States and Capital Cities.
Just some reminders:
- Homework is sent home on Monday and collected on a Friday.
- Overdue library books need to be returned.
- Students’ handwriting books will now be used in class and should be brought into school.
I look forward to more quality weeks of learning with Year 3.
Regards,
Miss Trudy Sinnamon
Welcome back to Term 3! Year 4 has had the privilege of having Mitchell Gulson (Mr. G) to teach them for the first 2 weeks of this Term. Mitchell will be finishing his placement for teaching at the end of week 3. The students have responded well to his teaching and Mitchell has made some great connections with the students to enhance their learning experiences. Mitchell will be missed when he leaves Weipa after his placement.
The first 2 weeks of this Term have been a mixture of all things English, Maths, Science, Geography and Drama! The students were introduced to the elements of Drama and have started perfecting their voices, projection, expression and use of stage space to put on a play for their peers. I’m hoping to film their performances and share them with you later this Term.
Reminders:
- Homework is given Monday and returned Friday (starting next week)
- Library returning and borrowing is now Thursday. Please check if there are any unreturned books at home and return them to school so your child can continue perfecting their reading skills.
- Health and PE is Friday
- AUSLAN is Thursday
Kind Regards,
Justin

Yr 6 News
Engaging and active assembly presentation last week about the 4 R’s!
A few comments after were that “I got stage fright… I forgot my lines…. I just went blank….”
Very normal when in front of a lot of people, and really great that students recognised this and will learn from it. We can’t be perfect all the time and it is such an important part of learning about speaking in front of others.
Writing does not come easy to everyone and it takes practise, practise practise!!! This term our focus in Yr 6 is to extend and enrich our writing skills- to use more grammatical concepts, include richer, descriptive language and to include more language features. Persuasive text is our genre, and each week we will be writing a persuasive text leading up to preparing a speech and a writing piece to present to an audience.
Our Maths learning has been exploring different types of advanced angles, using a protractor effectively and recognising rules to apply when calculating angles in different shapes and situations. The students have enjoyed the hands on approach and have definitely become more proficient at estimating an angle and using a protractor.
In our Science unit “Circuits and Switches” we have already started looking at how circuits work, why they work and what is needed to transfer power to a circuit. Lots of interesting hands on activities coming up for Science lessons. Our HASS unit is Geography and is exploring different cultures and how they connect to our culture in Australia. Last week we did lots of mapping skills and explored the different elements of our global system. Very impressed with the general knowledge of Yr 6 students in regard to countries and their ability to locate places. Must be a Weipa thing!
