Yr 6 News
Engaging and active assembly presentation last week about the 4 R’s!
A few comments after were that “I got stage fright… I forgot my lines…. I just went blank….”
Very normal when in front of a lot of people, and really great that students recognised this and will learn from it. We can’t be perfect all the time and it is such an important part of learning about speaking in front of others.
Writing does not come easy to everyone and it takes practise, practise practise!!! This term our focus in Yr 6 is to extend and enrich our writing skills- to use more grammatical concepts, include richer, descriptive language and to include more language features. Persuasive text is our genre, and each week we will be writing a persuasive text leading up to preparing a speech and a writing piece to present to an audience.
Our Maths learning has been exploring different types of advanced angles, using a protractor effectively and recognising rules to apply when calculating angles in different shapes and situations. The students have enjoyed the hands on approach and have definitely become more proficient at estimating an angle and using a protractor.
In our Science unit “Circuits and Switches” we have already started looking at how circuits work, why they work and what is needed to transfer power to a circuit. Lots of interesting hands on activities coming up for Science lessons. Our HASS unit is Geography and is exploring different cultures and how they connect to our culture in Australia. Last week we did lots of mapping skills and explored the different elements of our global system. Very impressed with the general knowledge of Yr 6 students in regard to countries and their ability to locate places. Must be a Weipa thing!
