Newsletter Week 2 Term 2
A school newsletter is now produced every fortnight.
Dear Families of St Joseph’s,
Welcome back to Term 2! We hope you had a great first week back. It really is great seeing the students after the holidays and hearing all about what they did and where they went! We have a fantastic term of learning ahead of us and look forward to working with all of our students and families.
What an action -packed week we had to begin our term! We started the week with our Easter Liturgy then Parent/Teacher Interviews and ended the week with our Cross Country Carnival and ANZAC Day Service. A huge thank you to everyone who has contributed in some way to make our first week back such a successful and happy start to the term.
We have a very busy and important term ahead of us filled with some significant events.
This week, we celebrate the Feast of St Joseph the Worker. This is especially important to us as the Catholic Church is celebrating this year as “The Year of St Joseph”. On Wednesday we celebrated with a whole school Liturgy in the morning followed by delicious cupcakes made by Veronica Ah Shay. Throughout the week each class will participate in some fun activities related to St Joseph.
Unfortunately, Fr Dariusz could not be with us this week but on the Monday of week 8 we will be having our ‘Year of St Joseph Mass’. At this Mass we will be inducting our student leaders and giving out the Spirit of St Joseph’s Awards. Invitations will be sent to each family closer to the date.
At Friday’s assembly we will be giving our Weekly St Joseph’s Way Awards and Libby Lange will give out the trophy to the winning team and medallions to the winners of the 3km races. As usual teachers will contact parents of those receiving the awards so that you can attend.
Cross Country
The annual St Joseph's Cross Country was held last Friday and what a day it was. All students put in a mammoth effort showing persistence and drive in all races. It was a close competition with Embley being the overall champions for the day winning with 103 points. Pine came a close second with 95 points followed by Mission who had 76 points. Thank you to staff and parents, your great teamwork and the support you all gave each other made it such a smooth event. A special thank you to Libby Lange who worked hard to ensure the event was a success. St Joseph’s community have always had a proud tradition of getting in an helping out when ever they see a need and I was so pleased to see that tradition continue. The top three runners for each race are listed below.
Mother’s Day
This year we would like to invite our Mum's to come into school and celebrate Mother's Day with us. On Friday 7th May St Joseph’s will be having a Mother's Day Liturgy presented by Year 1 at 8:40am, followed by a special morning tea supplied by the P&F. Then Mums will participate in an Art and Craft morning with your children till 10:30am.
A Parent Slip will soon be sent to you for you to choose which craft session you would like to attend with your child/children. Please note that spots are limited and some activities may fill up, so get in quick.
We will also be running the Mother's Day Stall again this year. Gifts will be $5 each. This year gifts have been sourced from some of our local businesses. If you wish for your child to purchase a gift, please send them to school with money in a clearly named bag on Thursday 6th May. The stall will be running in the afternoon from 11.10am till 1.10pm.
The P&F need volunteers to help with the running of the stall and serving morning tea, so come on Dads and sign up. (please let the office know if you can volunteer)
Thank you to the P&F for their support of this event and thank you to the staff and community members who will help to make it a great celebration. We appreciate your ongoing support.
St Joseph’s School Dance
Another special event we will be having this term is our first St Joseph’s School dance. Dance is part of the Art Curriculum and is taught over one term each year. This year we have decided to celebrate with an end of term dance on Friday 18th June. On the night, each class will perform a dance they have learnt throughout the term. I have heard a rumour that there is also a teacher’s dance. We hope this will be a success and become a St Joseph’s tradition.
ENROL IN PREP TODAY
We are commencing the enrolment process for our 2022 Prep classes this term and will be holding interviews in weeks 8,9 and 10. As existing families with Prep age children receive priority placement, I urge existing family to ensure they have lodged their enrolment online or collect an application package from the office.
I would also ask for your assistance in informing new families who may be considering enrolling a child here at St Joseph’s in any grade to make contact with the school as soon as possible. We also have some small classes throughout the school where additional enrolments could be accepted.
Our goal is to increase our school enrolment. At present we have an enrolment of 140. We need your help to continue to grow our school so that we can continue to upgrade our buildings and resourced. Word of mouth is always the best form of communication and I am always thankful for the positive feedback I hear from new enrolments and I am most appreciative of those of you who spread the “good news” about our great school.
ANZAC Day: Thank you to Yr 2 and Mrs Michelle Gear who prepared and led the school in a thoughtful, reflective ANZAC Day Assembly. Also a special thank you to Major Michael Finch who gave the ANZAC address at our service. It was great to see so many children and families attend the Dawn service. We can be proud of the way our students represented our school with respect and reverence.
Volunteers Induction Volunteers are a very valuable asset to the St Joseph’s community. It is a requirement by Cairns Catholic Education Services (CES) for all volunteers to attend and complete the 'Volunteers Induction Program'. Mrs Michelle, APRE, will guide all our wonderful volunteers through this. We would like to hold our first induction in week 5 so please let us know in the office if you are interested in volunteering.
Attendance Matters
Improved student attendance is an ongoing priority at St Joseph’s. Schools and parents/carers have a shared responsibility to ensure that children attend school regularly.
Research shows that good school attendance impacts upon children’s success in learning; good attendance helps them to fulfil their potential and gives them a chance of a better future.
We want your children to have the same educational opportunities for success as any child in a Cairns school. Every day that your child is absent from school is an opportunity missed.
Weipa Term 1 Cairns Schools Term 1
In 2020, we averaged an attendance level of 72% which equates to approx. 40 of our students having 20 or more days off a week. 20 days adds up to Our goal for 2021 is to improve our attendance level to at least 92%. I encourage all parents to help in achieving this important priority for your children’s success.
As a school, we look at ways to support you to improve your child’s attendance and we have a range of systems in place to recognise and reward good attendance.
Rewards for good attendance:
Class Attendance The class with the highest attendance each fortnight will all receive the honour of looking after our ‘Attendance Fish’ and our new attendance mascot ‘Barry the Barra’.
Individual student attendance If a student has 100% attendance for the fortnight they receive a sticker on their attendance card. Once a student has 4 stickers for the term they are able to attend the Principal’s morning tea at the end of the term.
Each Semester students who have reached the school attendance goal of 92% receive an Attendance Award Certificate. Those students who have achieved 100% attendance for the Semester receive a medallion.
End of the Year Students who have achieved the attendance goal of 92% or more receive a medallion and go into the draw for a prize. Students who achieve 100% attendance for the year receive an Attendance Trophy and also go into the raffle for a prize.
Whole school Attendance Monitoring
We display the whole school attendance rate on our notice board and update it fortnightly.
Mid Term Letter of Attendance
We have found that most student absences at St Joseph’s are due to having a day off here and there. We recognize that it can be difficult to keep a track of how many days your child has been away that is why halfway through each term we send home a letter notifying you of your child’s attendance.
If you are experiencing any difficulties with your child’s attendance or punctuality or would like to discuss this further, please contact the school office to arrange an appointment with myself. Many thanks for your continued support.
God Bless,
Megan.
Stations of the Cross
At the end of Term 1 Year 5 and 6 led the whole school in the Stations of the Cross during Holy Week. They presented the 14 stations which followed the journey of Jesus to the Cross. The students did a reverent and prayerful representation of the stations. Thank you to the Emerick family for kindly making and donating the beautiful crosses which were used.
Change of Season- Easter- Christ has Risen.
We have returned to school entering a new season in the Church Liturgical Year…Easter. This is a time of renewal and a time to celebrate the risen Christ. The prayer spaces in the classrooms have been changed to represent the change in season. They now have white cloths, the colour of new life and joy, a bible to represent the stories of the Resurrection of Christ, Holy Water to represent the new life in Christ and the pascal candle a symbol that Jesus is always with us. This season will last for 50 days.
ANZAC DAY
Last Friday the school gathered to commemorate those who have sacrificed their life to protect our country. The ANZAC Day Liturgy was led by Year 2 to respectfully remember those Australian and New Zealand veterans who fought at Gallipoli. The St Joseph’s community also joined in the Weipa RSL Dawn Service on Sunday morning, participating in the march, and laying a wreath on behalf of the school. Thank you to all the families who attended.
Feast of St Joseph the Worker
This Saturday the Church will celebrate the Feast of St Joseph the Worker (May 1st). Joseph was the earthly father of Jesus and the one chosen to care and protect his son and Mary. Although he is not mentioned many times in the bible, the stories we hear about him show his true qualities of being humble, showing love, taking responsibility and being faithful. St Joseph’s community gathered on Wednesday to celebrate Joseph with a liturgy and cupcakes. Thank you Mrs Ah Shay for the lovely St Joseph’s cupcakes.
PE NEWS
CROSS COUNTRY 2021
What a great feeling it was to have our school community together again for our Cross Country last Friday!!!
My first words are how impressed I was (as were all staff) at the resilience and team spirit of the students and how proud we were to see them dig deep and have fun!
Competitors displayed persistence when things got tough in the heat, they demonstrated resilience when they weren’t sure of the course or how long to go, and best of all they supported each other, no matter what team. As a teacher or parent, you couldn’t ask for more than that!
The Parents and Friends provided a sausage sizzle for the students and icy poles after their run. Thankyou to Aimee, Jo, Hayden, Brian and Robbo for your support and organising all the food.
Special thanks go to Nik Clegg and Kylie Argent for being our amazing running support for the students on the day. Particular mention to the Yr 6 students for really stepping up on the day for assisting younger students and doing whatever they were asked to do without question. Their enthusiasm and desire to help was truly inspirational!
To Brad, Brian, Matt and Chrissy and staff who helped set up in the morning. What a team!
To everyone who helped pack up in such a short time after the event. Thankyou. It was such a quick pack up and that was so much appreciated.
To Parent Helpers on checkpoints: Paul, Kellie, Meedz, Hayden, Matt, Stacey and Mitchell. You were there all morning encouraging each student and I know it made such a difference to them.
To Dee Foy for being our First Aid Officer, your presence was very much appreciated.
To Katrina Schofield for allowing us to borrow the blow up FINISH LINE. How exciting was it for the kids to run over that as their final run!

Dear parents, guardians and carers
Re: Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)
Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
- year of schooling
- category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
- level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
This information assists schools to:
- formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
- consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
- develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.
The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.
The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy).
Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).
If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.
Kind regards
Principal
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to Term 2. It is hard to believe that we are in Week 2 already and the children have been introduced and engaged in many programs already during the Term.
Second Step
In Term 1 all classes were introduced to the Second Step Program. Second Step SEL is research-based, teacher-informed, and classroom-tested to promote the social-emotional development, safety, and well-being of children from Early Learning through Grade 8. Children learn and practice vital skills for listening and paying attention, having empathy, managing emotions, building friendships, and solving problems with others. The 25-minute interactive lessons and discussion-based activities with distinct grade-level experiences. The lessons focus on Social-Emotional Learning:
- • Mindsets & Goals
- • Recognising Bullying & Harassment
- • Thoughts, Emotions, & Decisions
- • Managing Relationships & Social Conflict
These lessons will continue throughout the Year for Prep to Year 6.
Zones of Regulation
The Zones is a systematic, cognitive behavioural approach used to teach self-regulation by categorising all the different ways we feel and states of alertness we experience into four concrete-coloured zones. The Zones of Regulation uses four colours to help children self-identify how they’re feeling and categorise it based on colour. The curriculum also helps children better understand their emotions, sensory needs, and thinking patterns. They learn different strategies to help them cope and manage their emotions based on which colour zone they’re in.
The Green Zone
The green zone is used to describe when you’re in a calm state of alertness
Being in the green zone means you are calm, focused, happy, or ready to learn. This is predominantly the state you want your child to be in.
It’s also the state most needed in the classroom in order to learn.
The Yellow Zone
The yellow zone describes when you have a heightened sense of alertness. This isn’t always a bad thing, and you still have some control of your actions when you’re in the yellow zone.
Being in the yellow means you may feel frustrated, anxious or nervous. But, it could also mean you’re feeling excited, silly, or hyper – which is okay in the right situations.
The Red Zone
The red zone describes an extremely heightened state of intense emotions. When a person reaches the red zone, they’re no longer able to control their emotions or reactions.
Being in the red zone means you’re feeling anger, rage, terror, or complete devastation and feel out of control.
The Blue Zone
The blue zone, on the other hand, is used when a person is feeling low states of alertness or arousal. When you’re in the blue zone you may be feeling down – sad, sick, tired, or bored. You’re still in control, as you are in the yellow zone, but with low energy emotions.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
Our school community has identified the following school wide expectations to teach and promote our high standards of responsible behaviour:
- Be Respectful
- Be Responsible
- Be Resilient
- Be Ready for Learning
PB4L assemblies take place on Monday’s at 2pm followed by Second Step lessons.
Personalised Learning Plans (PLPs)
The teachers are in the process of writing Personalised Learning Plans (PLPs) and meeting with Parents. Personalised learning is a process that supports a wide range of students with additional learning and support needs. This includes students who may require support in one or more of the following areas: learning (including high potential learners), behaviour, social/emotional, cultural/language (including international students, boarders and learners of English as an Additional Language or Dialect) and those who have educational support needs arising from disability. Teachers, with the support of the Leader of Diversity, and in consultation with parents, collaboratively decide which adjustments and/or goals are to be targeted and determine appropriate strategies and supports to be implemented. It is the teacher’s responsibility to implement these planned strategies in order to support students to meet their goals. Teachers will direct School Officer support and plan for adjustments on a weekly basis. Teachers communicate weekly with School Officers regarding student progress and make adjustments as needed. Evidence is collected regularly and uploaded to ENGAGE. PLP meetings are set 6 monthly and will determine if current goals have been achieved before setting further goals.
NCCD - Nationally Consistent Collection of Data
The NCCD is an annual collection of information from all Australian schools on the numbers of students with disability and the adjustments they receive. All Teachers at St. Joseph’s School will be expected to understand their obligations to students with disability under the DDA and the Disability Standards for Education 2005 and consistently collect and provide evidence which is recorded on ENGAGE.
Last week we welcomed back Tosca Grainger - Dee our School Counsellor and she will continue to provide her service to St. Joseph's School.
If you have any questions please feel free to make contact with myself at a convenient time that suits. My email address is mturner@cns.catholic.edu.au

Melanie Turner.
Prep Newsletter – Term 2 Week 2
In English, the students have been focusing and will be focusing on the letters p, i, f and r. This week’s focus was ‘f’ for flamingo and next week will be the letter ‘r’ for rabbit. Students have started reading and decoding simple words when reading simple books and students that returned their library book bags were given a reader on Wednesday. Please return these in your homework books on Fridays. We have started exploring tricky words that are words that cannot be sounded out or are ‘tricky’ to sound. These include I, the, my, a, is, was, you, to, they and that.
In Maths, students have been learning about data collection using tally marks. Students have also been continuing their voting of yes or no. Students have still been working on their number and value knowledge and understanding.
In Religion, students have been focusing on the life of Jesus, the Easter story and the resurrection of how Jesus appeared to people and his disciples after he died on the cross.
In Science, students have been learning about weather, the different types of weather and its affects on our daily lives. This means what we wear, where we go and the activities we can do.
In HASS, students have been learning about different places and how they are important to us. We are also looking at the different places in the world that we and the different things we know about them and how they are important to different people.

Year 1 Week

What a terrific start to Term 2 we have had! We are loving our new sensory walk to warm up our bodies before we warm up our brains. In Literacy this term we are learning about Narratives, and how good writers develop interesting characters. We will be studying the book Amy and Louis, making connections between characters in the text and the people in our own lives, particularly good friends. This week we will be learning about the long “i” sound and different spelling choices we can make. We will learn that y is a vowel when representing the I sound at the end of words (sky, fly). The students will be introduced to trigraphs (3 letters making one sound) as we learn igh words (right, night).
In Religion we have been learning about the Easter period in the lead up to Pentecost. The students are analysing the scripture of the Empty Tomb and the resurrection of Jesus to join his Father in heaven. Our prayer space has been re-created with a white cloth to symbolise new life. This week we will also be celebrating the feast day of St Joseph. St Joseph is a role model for our community – hard worker, kind to his friends, considerate of his family. We will be participating in various construction activities and will have a liturgy to celebrate this special day.
In mathematics we have been developing our knowledge of number sequences especially our ability to skip count both forwards and backwards by 10s, 5s and 2s. To do this we have participated in a range of hands on activities involving dice, counters, straws, number cards, drawings and caterpillar craft. We also love playing ‘buzz off’, a fun game to practice our counting fluency. We have also been learning to measure and compare lengths using informal units such as blocks, handspans and strips of paper to determine if items are longer, shorter or taller. This week in maths we will be learning about open number lines and measuring the capacity of containers.
In Science we are completing an Earth and Space unit. Last week we compared the features of the Earth to those things found in the sky. This week, we will be learning about the different types of clouds and then constructing our own clouds using cotton wool balls.
Our Geography and Design Technology units tie in nicely with our Science this term. As part of all three of these units students will be asked to explore the features of their favourite environment/place around Weipa/Cape. Could you please send or email through some photos of your child’s favourite place as we will unpack the features of these places throughout the term. Please only select one place but feel free to send multiple photos of this place. Students will be creating a diorama at the end of the term to showcase their favourite place.

Hello families of Year 2,
The start of term 2 has been energetic and engaging as students stepped straight back into their learning! We have been revising what the 4R’s looks like in the school and in our classroom. Over term 2, we will be covering new areas of learning and as a school we have some fantastic new resources to assist us!
Religion: In Religious Education this term students will be looking at different scripture to learn the ways Jesus and his community lived. We will look at Jesus’ actions in different readings, such as Jesus healing a crippled woman, and how we could be more like Jesus in times of need.
English: We are continuing with our narrative writing this term, and students will be looking closely at different texts to create an innovation and new ending to the story line. We will look at the structure of an imaginative text, as well as the language we use and the characters in the texts.
Maths: In maths we will be looking at Australian notes and coins, as well as number strands, including addition and subtraction and multiplication and division. This is where all of the new math resources will really come into practise to help us solve problems!
Science: We are going to be investigating living things in science this term. Students will have the opportunity to look at the life cycle, habitat, offspring, and changes that occur to living things. We are hoping to grow something exciting later in the term!
Geography: We are going to be exploring connections to places and different features of places.
The Arts: For Art this term, students will be assisting me in choreographing a dance. We will choose the steps and music, so stay tuned for some hip hop moves!
Technology: In Design and Technology this term we are going to investigate forces, such as push and pull. Students will be making objects to which they can use force to move, such as puppets and toys.
Reminders:
- Library is Friday
- Health and PE is Thursday
- Safe of Social lesson is Friday
- AFL lessons is Friday in weeks 2, 3, 6, 7, 9 (sport shoes required)
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me through email or the office.
Kind Regards,
Emily
Welcome back to Term 2! I am so looking forward to working with the Year 3 students on another productive and busy term. The students have made a great start to the term and it has been wonderful meeting with parents to discuss your child’s learning from Term 1 and how they will be supported moving into Term 2 during parent teacher interviews these first few weeks.
It was fantastic to see many Year 3 students at the Dawn Service on Sunday morning and participating in the march to remember those who fought for our country. We have been exploring ANZAC day and what that means towards the end of Term 1 and the first week of Term 2. We were fortunate enough to have our questions answered by Liam Hogan from the Australian Defence Force about why we march on ANZAC day, why poppies are used to remember the fallen, and when did we first begin recognising the ANZACS.
We have a lot on this term and a lot of new topics to be covered.
English: narratives.
Math: addition and subtraction, fractions, 3D shapes, data and graphs, money, symmetry, and angles.
Religion: Jesus the Messiah.
Science: melting moments – composition and behaviour of substances.
Technology: what’s for lunch? Food and fibre in modern and traditional societies.
Art: dance – celebrating dance (performance to be held in Week 9).
HASS: Civics and Citizenship – participating in my community.
In Week 1, students were sent home a parent letter with the new dates of health and PE, new changes to homework, a calendar with upcoming dates for the term and information about AFL beginning this term. If you did not receive this, please let me know and I will send one home with your child.
Health and PE: Thursdays – sports uniform required.
AFL: Fridays 30/4, 7/5, 28/5, 4/6, 18/5 – sports shoes required, not sports uniform.
Library: Tuesday – please bring in library bags. Borrowed books cannot go home unless bags are bought to school. One book will be selected for home reading and one to read at school.
Homework: due Monday, goes home Tuesday.
Mother’s Day: Please email a photo of yourself and your child/ren before Wednesday 5th May, to be included in a slideshow for students in the class.
It has been a wonderful start to Term 2 in Year 4 with our visit from JCU Pre-service teacher Mitchell Gulson (Mr. G). The students really liked working with him and are looking forward to his return in Term 3 for some more teaching. As well as Mr. G, students were treated to a visit from the Northern Pride this week for some football drills and fitness activities. Students competed against each other and showed tremendous sportsmanship towards one another. As the students delve into their learning throughout the Term, I look forward to sharing their improvements and discoveries across all the subjects.
Welcome back to another busy term at St Joseph’s. Already we have had so much happening. Last Friday was a fantastic day of team and school spirit with our Cross Country event. I loved seeing our Year 5 step up and support their team mates and class mates. No man/woman was left behind and all of the students finished feeling proud of themselves. This week we have had the Northern Pride visit the school and we were fortunate enough to be able to do some skills and drills with them. The Pride team are hoping to set this up as a regular monthly gig which will be great for our students. We also celebrated the feast of St Joseph the Worker. How lucky were we to get a cupcake made by our very own Veronica Ah Shay. Thank you... they were delicious.
Below you will find a brief run down of what will be taught in each subject area throughout the term. If you would like to know some further information, both Melanie and myself would be happy to discuss this with you.
