Year 1 Week

What a terrific start to Term 2 we have had! We are loving our new sensory walk to warm up our bodies before we warm up our brains. In Literacy this term we are learning about Narratives, and how good writers develop interesting characters. We will be studying the book Amy and Louis, making connections between characters in the text and the people in our own lives, particularly good friends. This week we will be learning about the long “i” sound and different spelling choices we can make. We will learn that y is a vowel when representing the I sound at the end of words (sky, fly). The students will be introduced to trigraphs (3 letters making one sound) as we learn igh words (right, night).
In Religion we have been learning about the Easter period in the lead up to Pentecost. The students are analysing the scripture of the Empty Tomb and the resurrection of Jesus to join his Father in heaven. Our prayer space has been re-created with a white cloth to symbolise new life. This week we will also be celebrating the feast day of St Joseph. St Joseph is a role model for our community – hard worker, kind to his friends, considerate of his family. We will be participating in various construction activities and will have a liturgy to celebrate this special day.
In mathematics we have been developing our knowledge of number sequences especially our ability to skip count both forwards and backwards by 10s, 5s and 2s. To do this we have participated in a range of hands on activities involving dice, counters, straws, number cards, drawings and caterpillar craft. We also love playing ‘buzz off’, a fun game to practice our counting fluency. We have also been learning to measure and compare lengths using informal units such as blocks, handspans and strips of paper to determine if items are longer, shorter or taller. This week in maths we will be learning about open number lines and measuring the capacity of containers.
In Science we are completing an Earth and Space unit. Last week we compared the features of the Earth to those things found in the sky. This week, we will be learning about the different types of clouds and then constructing our own clouds using cotton wool balls.
Our Geography and Design Technology units tie in nicely with our Science this term. As part of all three of these units students will be asked to explore the features of their favourite environment/place around Weipa/Cape. Could you please send or email through some photos of your child’s favourite place as we will unpack the features of these places throughout the term. Please only select one place but feel free to send multiple photos of this place. Students will be creating a diorama at the end of the term to showcase their favourite place.
