Dear St Joseph’s families and friends,
Welcome back! I hope everyone had a relaxing break. The start of a new term is always an extremely exciting time for both students and staff, particularly the final term of the school year.
I really enjoy this part of the year where we can reflect on the year to date and marvel on the academic, emotional and spiritual development of each child in the school.
With only six weeks to go before another school year ends, there are many things on our calendar between now and 25th November. The end of year is always a very hectic time filled with orientation days, farewells, graduations, gatherings and occasions that add to the rich school life from which our children benefit so much.
This term is an important, exciting and big term for Year Six. It is the term where there are many 'last times', transitions and social/emotional learnings. Year 6 started transition visits to WCC on Thursday and last week they went down to Camp Paterson near Mareeba, had fun, behaved well and returned safe, but tired!
Last week, Amanda O’Brien and I, were fortunate to be able to spend some time with the students on camp, before attending Professional development in Cairns during the day. Year 6 had a great time participating in the many activities on offer at Camp Patterson. It was an excellent opportunity for students to try new things, face new challenges and discover new talents. It was difficult for Amanda and myself to leave to attend Curriculum training when there was so much fun to be had. Camp Patterson is extremely well run by the experienced camp instructors and supported by teachers. Thanks to Melanie Turner and Stacey Edmonds who gave freely of their time away from their families to enable such a great experience for the children. Thanks also goes to Mrs Gear for organising the camp/travel logistics that ensured the camp went smoothly.
I was impressed with and proud of the respectful and responsible way our Year 6 students conducted themselves throughout the trip. The owners of the camp also had high praise for the maturity and manners of our children. Please keep our Year 6 classes in your thoughts and prayers as they prepare for the next stage of their lives.
In preparation for being Student Leaders in 2023, the Year 5 class will participate in a Leadership Retreat at school in the coming weeks.
This week we also welcome our new Prep students to St Joseph’s for the first of three orientation mornings. Thursday 13th, 20th and 27th October 9 till 10:30am. This is a great opportunity for students to settle in before beginning formal schooling.
NAPLAN RESULTS 2022
Individual student reports have finally arrived. If you have a child in year 3 or 5 please come into the office and collect their NAPLAN reports. These reports provide information on how individuals performed on each of the NAPLAN tests that took place in May.
Normally at this time of year we would also receive the school results in comparison the state and national average. However, The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) has advised that the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) 2022 Summary report of preliminary results will not be released this year due to lower than usual student participation rates in NAPLAN as a result of the pandemic, flu and floods.
Let Your God Love You
Be silent.
Be still.
Alone,
Empty
Before your God.
Say nothing.
Ask nothing.
Be silent.
Be still.
Let your God
Look upon you.
That is all.
God knows.
And understands.
God loves you with
An enormous love,
Wanting only to
Look upon you
With love
Quiet.
Still.
Be.
Let your God Love you.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome back to Term 4. I hope you had a wonderful break and I look forwarding to seeing you all throughout the Term.
I had the privilege of being a Foundation member of the School to attend the Year 6 Camp last week to Camp Paterson, near Mareeba and what a wonderful opportunity it was.
The experience over the 4 days was filled with lots of activities, challenges and laughter. Scott and Lyn (Camp owners) were incredibly friendly and helpful.
The Year 6 students demonstrated throughout the 4 days the skills of: Persistence, Confidence, Getting Along, Organisation and Resilience.

We have had a fabulous fortnight!
- In English we are exploring retelling stories. This week, we read Blossum Possum by Gina M. Newton and we loved re-telling the story using puppets! Students have become very engaged in character portrayal and depicting events in order in the stories we have read. They have lots of ideas about how we can extend our retell using props, costumes and puppets. One of our most important focus areas during our book discussions is on the differences between and purposes of imaginative and informative texts.
- We are encouraging all the students to share their knowledge and opinions about stories as this helps everyone to build their understandings. To support your student to build their comprehension of stories you read together, you can ask them to predict what the story will be about and what might happen. After you read the story, you can ask them to tell you what actually happened. Help them put events in order and ask why they think things happened the way the did. Perhaps they might be able to think of a different way the story could have ended.

- In Maths we are consolidating our knowledge of numbers. Counting to forwards to 100 has been a real highlight this week. We are also busy practicing counting forwards and backwards from 20, so if you can provide some additional opportunities at home, it would be really beneficial. In statistics and probability, we have completed activities relating to data that involve collecting data and representing it at the same time. We encouraged the students to physically arrange themselves to answer a simple yes/no question, and we have used multiple ways to represent the information we collected. Using hands-on materials has allowed the students to fully engage and focus on making inferences from the information we collected.
- Swimming was just sensational this week and a big relief from the hot weather!
Welcome back to Term Four!
My goodness, we can’t believe we are saying that already. We hope you all had an enjoyable holiday break and managed to squeeze in some rest time somewhere in between. This term we have hit the ground running. Please see below a little snippet of all the fantastic things we will be getting up to.
In Maths, we have been exploring patterns and the concept of half. In English, we have been working hard to bump up our reading skills and for writing we’ve jumped into poetry which has been an exciting change. HASS and Science see us learning about living and non-living as well as places and how we can care for the special places in our communities. Religion this term is all about Mary and we cannot wait to show you the beautiful pictures we have created all about our special mums because we know that Mary was a special mum too! Technologies is about data collection and using digital platforms to share this data in a variety of ways. We look forward to exploring lots of new concepts in Arts and PE with Miss Libby, Health with Mrs O’Brien, AUSLAN with Mrs Gear and Music with Mrs Turner which we will keep you updated about.
We commenced our swimming lessons again this week and look forward to the following two lessons to come, and then of course our annual swimming carnival! Please enjoy our photos of our very first lesson which as you can tell by our faces, we thoroughly enjoyed.

Many thanks,
Year One.
Hi families,
Year 2 has had a great start this Term.
In Maths Year 2 started off exploring simple addition and subtraction with some board games which was great fun. They have worked really hard over the past weeks with skip counting and expanded notation in Mathematics. They were so amazing they were rewarded with a cool Icey pole after second break.
We had Futsal Friday and had so much fun. Thankyou Mr. Futsal for coming to our school and teaching us a new skill.
Miss Libby has been developing Year 2’s technology skills. They have started exploring their families and using their Chromebooks on Google Slides.
We started our swimming again and Year 2 had a fabulous time! Here are some great big smiles.

Geography in Year 3
Have you ever been to a school in another country? Have you ever wondered what the school might look like or what kinds of uniforms students wear?
In Geography this term, the year 3 students are researching what a class and school looks like in another country. This week students have started to investigate class size, uniforms and what kind of school supplies are common in classrooms.
Later this term, they will investigate the games students play at lunchtime and what an average lunch looks like in their chosen country.
Here are some facts that students discovered this week.
Hello families and friends of Year 4,
Thank you all for a great start to Term 4! Over the past 2 weeks, the students have dived straight into learning and into the pool. It was fabulous to hear such great feedback from other teachers about Year 4’s commitment and behaviours at swimming training.
In English this term, students will be comparing imaginative and informative texts, and identifying the similarities and differences in the language features, structure and how the author engages the reader.
In maths this term, we cover a little bit of everything. So far we have looked at measurement and maps. We will continue to work on financial maths (money) and telling and converting time. The students have been enjoying doing small group tasks in maths, where they have to solve inquiry questions together.
Gentle reminders for the term:
- PE, Health, Music Friday
- Art Thursday
- AUSLAN Thursday
- Assembly Friday afternoons (2:20pm)
News from Years 5/6 - Senior Learning Hub
What a fantastic start to Term 4. Our Year 6 students were fortunate enough to start the term off at Camp Paterson making memories they will treasure a lifetime. Each student showed their strengths and some weaknesses as they were presented with many different challenges to overcome. As staff we walked away with smiles on our faces and proud of the people they have grown into.
While the Year 6’s were away, the Year 5 students took on the responsibilities of all leadership roles. They had to put the flags up, lead assembly and help out around the school where needed.
A number of our students from The Hub also had the opportunity to represent Weipa in a First Nations Netball Carnival in Cairns last Friday. All the kids from the cape played with grit but most of all had a great time. They learnt a lot about themselves and their team mates.
Swimming has kicked off again with our swimming carnival just around the corner. Students got in the pool with enthusiasm, like we didn’t even have a break. We are working on our strokes and stamina. Next week we need to remember our long sleeve shirts and pants for our safety swim session. Look out for the reminder email.
Our Year 5’s have been busy learning about Space and our Year 6’s learning to analyse song lyrics. This is a challenge but they are keen to learn more and get into our deep learning next week. More to come on these concepts next newsletter.
Dates to Remember:
Year 6 Students wear Senior Shirts: Monday and Thursdays for Term 4
Swimming Clothes: Week 3- Wednesday and Friday (long sleeve shirt and pants for this session)
Friday wear sports uniforms for PE lessons
Friday return/swap library books
SWIMMING
Great start to our 3 lessons of swimming this term. Students were eager and remembered lots of the water safety elements we taught in Term 1. This Friday students will complete the safety skills and awareness program we have been focusing on. Next Wednesday we will run through the events for our Swimming Carnival on Thursday, so all students know what events they are swimming in.
Thankyou parents for getting your children ready to go for our lessons. Remember goggles for Friday for those who didn’t have them!
Just keep swimming……
FUTSAL
Last Friday Eugene (Mr Futsal) from TCIFA (Cairns) came for the day to introduce the game of FUTSAL to our school. It was so much fun and a fast-moving game, great for fitness and ball skills.
Eugene taught us what FUTSAL means (football + indoor) and the difference between FUTSAL and soccer.
Students learnt how to dribble a ball, STOP or BLOCK the ball for better control and how to make strong kicks and passes. He coached the older students about defence positions and strategies to use. Overall it was a great learning experience and so good to learn a new sport! I learnt a lot from him and feel confident to continue teaching this at school.
Eugene will be back in Week 5 so we hope he will visit us again.
Yours in Sport,
Libby Lange

Although we had quite an interrupted Term 3 with our ARTS lessons, every class is close to completing their tasks and learning more each week about the Elements of Drama and/or the Elements of Media Arts.
Yr P-1 Students can recognise, draw and act out a range of about 12 different emotions. We have been playing the “Playing Faces” game in class each week, as well as Charades to help them understand how to react to emotions and how to deal with a range of feelings. We have had lots of fun doing this. Super stars have been so on task with this drama concept.
Yr 2-4 Although each class is working on quite a different theme, they have all applied themselves really well to almost complete our tasks.
Yr 2 are working on How Important their Family is to them through a slideshow and adding effects.
Yr 3 have been working on advertising “WEIPA” as a place to visit and why.
Yr 4 have written a script about a “fractured fairytale” with some very curious and interesting characters and endings. Can’t wait to hear the end result of these.
Yr 5-6 Students have completed designing their avatar/character, created a slideshow based on the 4 R’s and their avatar demonstrating these. Our final task is to create a real life prop of their avatar and then present it to another class.
We have been discussing the importance of making and responding in media arts and drama, through feedback, warmup games and improvisation.
Members have the opportunity to get updated on the events and activities occurring in the school community, to provide input and suggestions on the allocation of the P&F Funds, and share any feedback or ideas.
We hope to see you there.
Kind regards
