Thank you for a great year!
This is the final newsletter for 2020… what a year! It won’t go down as one of the good ones but, we’ve managed to get through it and have much to be thankful for. Thank you to all our families for the patience and support you have shown the school this year, we truly appreciate it.
Goodbye and Farewell
This morning we said farewell to several St Joseph’s staff members, students and families.
In the spirit of God’s love, we pray for each of you, as life leads you on a new path.
May God’s spirit continue to renew in you the call to act justly, to love mercy and walk humbly with God who lies at the heart of all you do.
May our God of love continue to bless you and may Jesus live in your hearts forever.
Amen
We sadly say goodbye to Miss Megan Newell (APRE), Ms Sigita Ulanas (Learning Support Teacher) and Miss Andrieka Knight (Prep Teacher) and Mr Joe Simmons (Relief Contract Teacher). On behalf of St Joseph’s school community, I thank them for their hard work and dedication to our school and wish them all the best for 2021 and beyond.
We also farewelled our current Year 6 students. It has been a privilege to witness them grow & learn. I hope that their time at St Joseph’s has been enjoyable and that what they have learned here will hold them in good stead as they progress through life.
For a number of students and families, today ends a lengthy association with our school as they move to other locations. Parents, thank you for entrusting us with your children & for your many & varied contributions that have enriched our community. We wish you every happiness for the
future.
Have a safe, happy and Holy Christmas
On behalf of the staff of St Joseph’s Parish School, I wish you all a very safe, happy and Holy Christmas and holiday period. I particularly thank and extend our best wishes to those families
who are moving on from St Joseph’s at the end of the year. To those families returning in 2021, we will all be looking forward to seeing the children back at St Joseph’s when school resumes on Wednesday 27th January.
God bless!
This week we keep in our prayers:
- As the season of Advent approaches, let us contemplate the wonderful opportunities the season will bring.
- For our school community, that we may reflect on an extraordinary year and the wonderful opportunities for growth and development this year has presented.
- That our staff and students enjoy a well-deserved rest these holidays and stay safe this Christmas Season.
Sunday’s Gospel- Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.
Please find shared in this week’s newsletter: the Sunday prayer at home which has some wonderful resources to unpack this week’s readings in a family friendly way.
In 1925 Pope Pius XI decided it was time to challenge some of the hostile powers of the world during very unsettling times. He established the feast of Christ the King to let the battling political powers of the world know where the ultimate authority lay. With nearly a century passing since this time has seen the religious and secular politics of the world change radically, however, there are those who still dare to claim higher authority and power. This week’s reading is a reminder that none have loved and will ever love us like Jesus Christ. This week we remind ourself and fill our hearts with the knowledge that the Kingdom of Christ, is an eternal and universal kingdom, a kingdom that is full of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, and a kingdom of justice, love and peace. Such beautiful words to bring comfort as we move into this time of Advent. As the season begins let us care for each other and show compassion to those in need. This week’s feast of Christ the King may take place with a backdrop of heavenly glory, it is designed to anchor us firmly in the world as it is. This week’s let us reflect on how we care for others.
Season of Advent
During this extraordinary year, I write this final reflection as the Assistant Principal in Religious Education with deep gratitude, privilege, and joy. In a year of such highs and lows there has been so many amazing moments to reflect and appreciate this wonderful community and school at St Joseph’s. I am truly a big fan of Pope Francis and in particular his invitation to be ‘amazed by newness’ and I hope and pray that each family of this beautiful community spends an advent season full of deep peace, hope and joy. I wish that each day we celebrate in our hearts and be amazed by each offering that life presents each day with newness. I shall take with me many wonderful memories of my time here at St Joseph, that I go forth in my new job with Catholic Education and continue living my life the St Joseph’s Way. This wonderful town has truly left a mark on me and I feel truly blessed to be welcomed into this amazing community with such open arms and no matter where my journey continues I will always look back fondly on my time here in Weipa, especially the most spectacular sunsets I have ever been blessed to see.

Dear Parents / Guardians,
Thank you for a fantastic year filled with learning and fun! The Prep students did an amazing job at singing their songs at Starry Starry Night. We would like to thank you for all your support throughout the busy year. In the last week we have been celebrations Christmas around the world incorporating each country’s festivities.
From the Prep students and I, we wish you a blessed and merry Christmas. May the season of Advent remind you to prepare for the most special gift of all…Jesus.
Enjoy the holidays, stay safe and I look forward to seeing you all in 2021.
Kindest,
Miss Knight,
Ms Michele,
Ms Jo
In Maths, we consolidated our number sense by playing a variety of games. We shook a container of two sided coins and created number sentences. eg. 6 yellow plus 4 red equals 10. We practised our turn taking by working in pairs to play highest number wins. Using a deck of cards, the students placed a card down each. The person with the highest card takes both cards, person with the most cards at the end wins! We began with single cards, practised with two cards and even trialed 3 cards (hundreds).
Starry, Starry Night was such a joyful night. Thank you for sharing this special time of year with us. The students loved showcasing their hard work and sharing their concert with you.
I would like to thank you for your support and ongoing partnership this year. I am so proud of each and every student. I wish you and your family a happy Christmas and safe New Year. See you in 2021!

Hello everyone,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and collaboration throughout 2020. It has been fantastic to see your children grow and learn over the year, and I wish them all the best for Year 3! They will all do amazing things.

Even though there was no assembly last week, there was still 2 star students in Year 2. Both Daston Cardelli and Flynn Stainkey should be commended on their resilience and attitude towards learning.
This week St Joseph’s students will be participating in our Christmas Around the World. Students will experience Christmas celebrations and craft activities from 6 different countries around the world.
Final reminders:
- Any items from our school library needs to be returned
- If students have iPad charges at home that belong to the school, could they also be returned
- Students will be bringing home their workbooks and other belongings this week
- PE, Health and AUSLAN will remain on Thursday this week
Finally, I wish you all a safe and happy holiday period with your families.
Warm Regards,
Emily
Dear Year 3 Families and Friends,
With the Term Four coming to an end, it is a bittersweet feeling packing up the classroom and farewelling the Year Three class of 2020. I can say without a doubt that each child has grown and progressed whether it be socially or academically, and they are all showing the signs of readiness for Year Four. I am so proud of the milestones they have made from achieving Year Three content from the Australian Curriculum, solving problems calmly, to gaining a better understanding of self-regulation and the zones of regulation. As reports are sent home this week, I hope you spend some time celebrating the successes of this semester with your child. Thank you, parents for your ongoing support this year, for being proactive and responsive and always supporting decisions made with your child’s best interests at heart.
The Christmas festivities commenced last Friday with Starry Starry Night. Year Three did a spectacular job at singing Glory by Matt Maher and Aussie Jingle Bells. Their enthusiasm and creativity are to be commended.
From the Year Three students and I, we wish you a blessed and merry Christmas. May the season of Advent remind you to prepare for the most special gift of all…Jesus.
Enjoy the holidays, stay safe and I look forward to seeing you all in 2021.
Kindest regards,
Mrs Michelle Gear
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to Week 8. A big congratulations to the Year 4 Class for their great effort with their Prayer Assembly on Mission Week 2020 and what a great night we had at Starry, Starry Night and the students sounded amazing.
For Homework last week the students in Year 4 were looking at Symmetry and produced some fantastic work to show their representations of the Homework Task.
Nadioc Week
In Week 6 we celebrated Naidoc Week. The theme being Always was, Always will be.
One of the activities that the students participated in was to design an Acrostic to Poem.
On behalf of Sigita and myself we just wanted to say a very big ‘Thank you’ for all your support this year and congratulate the Year 4 students on all their hard work and resilience that they have displayed throughout the year.
We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and safe and happy holiday. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2021.

Wow! We have finally made it and what a year it has been. It was a year of many firsts for the Year 5’s and I’m so happy that we accepted it with determination and such responsibility. This past fortnight we have finished off our units of work for the term, with the last week, being a week for consolidation.
The Year 5’s were fortunate enough to travel to the pool with the Year 6 students as an end of year reward due to the cancelation of sporting activities. They behaved respectfully and responsibly whilst having a blast. We had a couple of challenges and some well-earned chillout time. They also worked extremely hard on their performances for Starry Starry Night. It takes great courage to get up in front of so many people. The Year 5’s have done the school proud.
This week we experienced Christmas Around the World. Students went to different classrooms where they were given information and an opportunity to do an activity that represents traditions in that country.
Today the Year 6’s handed over the baton of leadership to the Year 5’s. They got the opportunity to run fun minute to win it challenges for the entire school before we sent our Year 6 students off to their next adventure. It has been a great opportunity for the Year 5’s to step up.
I want to take the opportunity to thank all of the families of Year 5. We will be saying good-bye to some while we say I’ll see you next year to the rest. I have thoroughly enjoyed being able to teach this wonderful group of students and wish them all the best next year.
Kindest regards,
Stacey Edmonds
Yr 6 Newsletter by Yr 6 Students “Our Last Yr 6 one!”
We are so looking forward to our Graduation this week!!! We have been making a slideshow about our class for the night and can’t wait to find out who gets the Yr 6 Awards! We have been deciding what we are going to wear on our big night and we are very excited about it.
We all practised really hard for our Starry night song. We sung “Hope was Born this Night” and “Hallelujah”. Our amazing school officers (Rachael, Chrissy, Jo, Kylie, Kim) did an outstanding job to prepare our props and do some very last-minute costumes! Miss Libby and Mrs Edmonds were very patient as we experienced lots of changes. We were really proud of our song and know how hard we worked together to make the moves work and collaborate and problem solve. Miss Libby is secretly very proud of us too!
Our pool excursion last week was full of excitement. We did lots of fun games, had some free swimming and it was a very good morning. This reward was instead of the AFL day which was cancelled. It was just great to let off some energy.
As this is our last newsletter, we would like to write a couple of highlights from Yr 6. It was hard to remember some of them because we didn’t get to experience lots of things this year because of Covid. But we did get to do lots of great things. These are our favourites:
- School camp
- Getting our badges
- Running assemblies
- Auskick
- Designing our school shirts
- Mighty Rivers Flow song
We all would really like to thank all the staff at St Joseph’s for supporting us through our learning journey and we know that you all care about us.
We are looking forward to the end of primary school! Woohoo.
