Year 1 News

Dear Year 1 Parents and Friends,

Year One have been busy learning right up to the finish line, although it was disguised as games! This week we practised a new game called Switch It.

The students are given a word eg.“pad” and asked to change the word to “lad”. The students need to identify the sound/letter that is changing, underline the letter that is being removed, write the new letter underneath and finish the word. (Pad, Lad). We repeat this process about 10 times.

We loved sharing our innovated Magic Faraway Tree lands with the class. The students displayed their artwork and shared their story with the class. What terrific imaginations we have! I was also pleased to see our confidence when presenting, and respect when being an audience member.

In Maths, we consolidated our number sense by playing a variety of games. We shook a container of two sided coins and created number sentences. eg. 6 yellow plus 4 red equals 10. We practised our turn taking by working in pairs to play highest number wins. Using a deck of cards, the students placed a card down each. The person with the highest card takes both cards, person with the most cards at the end wins! We began with single cards, practised with two cards and even trialed 3 cards (hundreds).

Starry, Starry Night was such a joyful night. Thank you for sharing this special time of year with us. The students loved showcasing their hard work and sharing their concert with you.
