Year 5 News

We have gone Minecraft mad in Year 5 these past couple of weeks. Our Gold Rush worlds are starting to come along. We had to have a check in with Miss Edmonds to show how we were progressing and received some feedback on the things we need to focus on so we can keep on track to presenting a great world.

In our Math lessons we have been challenging ourselves with division and we know that this is a concept we will continue to look at throughout the year. We started ordering and comparing fractions this past week as well. Knowing how to put them in order from smallest to largest was important in us understanding that even though the denominator may be a big number, it doesn’t always mean that it is the biggest fraction. Equivalent fractions were a little tricky at first but once we could see a visual representation, we were fine. We are pretty good with our multiplication and repeated addition now so that helped a lot.

We have also started to look at our narrative poems on the Gold Rush. We need to be able to tell a story about the life on the goldfields using certain language that we usually only use for poetry. We know how to tell a story but adding in the language features its proving a little tougher than we thought. We are a resilient group of students, so I think we will get there in the end. We are thankful that we have a few weeks to write it.

This past week we have been presenting our class prayers to the class during our Ready, Set, Go! morning routine. It is nice to be able to watch our peers share hymns and prayers of thanks that mean something to them. We will continue to present our prayers until the end of term.
