Prep

Welcome to Week 10 and our final week of Term 2! We are so proud of how far the Preps have travelled this term and all the learning they have completed. We have enjoyed consolidating our learning the last couple of weeks by demonstrating everything we have learned this term. This has been through our assessments and further being able to put these skills into practice through a range of activities.

In Maths, we’ve been learning all about time and duration and how this is applicable to our own lives. We can sequence events that happen in a day, talk about the duration of events and also compare the duration of events too. As always, we love learning about number and using this in lots of different ways including equally sharing, partitioning, sequencing, writing, modelling and much more.

In English, we’ve been putting our writing skills to the test to write a retell of a story. We enjoy listening to the story first, discussing the events and then coming up with a sentence or two to talk about the story. It’s been exciting seeing how far we’ve come in our letters and sounds learning and how we use these when reading and writing. We continue learning our last letters and sounds next term including digraphs (2 letters) and trigraphs (3 letters), as well as our tricky words and using these in a range of different ways.

During Science, we have loved learning all about the weather this term. We’ve been exploring weather patterns, different types of weather, and how the weather affects our lives. This has provided us with lots of opportunities for hands on experiences and some experiments too which we love. We’ve also enjoyed integrating our weather learning into our Morning Routine where each day we got a turn at being the meteorologist to go out and observe the weather, and come back into the classroom to report to our peers what we found.

During Technologies, we’ve been learning all about materials and our favourite part was designing a boat. We got to design our boat, make our boat and test how well it could float. This was definitely one of our favourites with Mrs Dore this term. Mrs Dore has also been helping us with our AUSLAN and we are getting tricky by being able to communicate through AUSLAN to share short phrases and words.

During HASS, we focussed on Geography and looked at different places that are special to us. This included here in Weipa and also all around Australia and the world. We loved looking at maps and satellite images of earth and sharing with the class all about the places that are special to us.

We concluded our Religion unit where we learnt all about Jesus, who he was and how he lived growing up. It was very interesting being able to compare Jesus’ life to ours and looking at how some things were the same and some things were different.

HPE was exciting this term as we got to experience new sports – AFL and cricket. Visitors came up from Cairns and taught us the skills to be able to participate in these sports and we loved it. Health saw us learning about the very important topic of Cyber Safety and we enjoyed learning about personal information and how we can keep this information safe.

One of our favourite units for the term was our Arts unit because we got to learn all about dance. We explored how different cultures experience dance and use dance as part of their important cultural practices. We also got to learn our own dances and then be extra tricky by changing the dance up to incorporate changes in direction, tempo, levels and actions. We all loved moving to the music and it was lots of fun to be able to do this with our friends.

Exciting events for us this term were Under 8’s Day and the Sports Carnival and we look forward to more exciting events coming up in the new term.

As usual thank you for your continued support and please don’t hesitate to contact me on kbackhouse@cns.catholic.edu.au or SeeSaw should you wish to discuss anything.

Have a safe and enjoyable break and see you in the new term.
