Year 1
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to Week 4 Term 4. The students have been working extremely hard and getting ready to complete assessments and beginning to practice for the end of year celebrations. Today we also wore Red for Day for Daniel. Many of the students walked to school in remembrance of Daniel Morcombe and to raise awareness and money for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.
Maths
In Maths the past two weeks Year One have learning about place value. We have been using place value charts and MAB to make groups of tens and ones. The students have been working with 2 digit numbers but there have been many wanting a challenge so we have also used three digit numbers. Next week we will start to look at Capacity and the amount of liquid a container holds. You may want to start some disucssion at home about containers and how much water/liquid they hold.
Religion
In Religion the past two weeks Year One have been learning about Old Testament stories. One of their favourite has been Noah’s Ark. They have loved hearing the story in different ways, through the scripture, picture talks and through art. Each child created their own ark and have included pairs of animals which God asked Noah to do. The students have been wonderful at retelling the story, feel free to ask your child to tell you their own version.
Science
This week in Year 1 we learnt about Biological Science - Creatures and Habitats. The students created Animal Galleries this week and shared these with the class. They also identified living and non-living things and were able to paste the different features in the correct places.
Health
This unit that will be taught this Term is from the Respect Program will be Respectful Interactions. There are 2 Topics in this unit - Friendship, inclusion, belonging and Gender respect.
This week we Introduced the term ‘gender stereotypes’ and ask students if they know what this word means. We then defined the term and read a story that helped them understand the meaning. We prompted the students to think how they can change the impact of gender stereotypes by always behaving in self-respecting and respectful ways and treating each other equally and in inclusive ways. Perspective is an important skill to develop and understand. We encourage students to think about how to treat others by invoking the golden rule.
