Year 2

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome back to another term in year 2. We are excited to already be halfway through the year and have began the term with enthusiasm for our learning areas. We have been practising and preparing for our Dance in Week 3 and we are very excited to showcase our dance!

Week 1 we had a special visit from players and staff from Northern Pride Rugby. The players spoke to us about mental fitness then we got to go to the oval and play some games with them. Each student also brought home a Norther Pride poster.

This term in English our reading groups have continued. Strategies we have been learning so far this year include: predicting, inferring, connecting, asking questions, visualising and this term – finding the main idea. Students are also enjoying using dictionaries to help build their vocabulary. In Writing, students are learning about informative texts and their structure. This week we have looked at crocodiles and giraffes.

This term in Science we are learning about Living Things in our biological unit. Year 2 students have all planted some grass seeds to (hopefully!) grow into grass heads. We have been looking after our plants by providing our plants with soil, water, air and sunlight. Some students have also been talking to their plants as we discovered during our lessons how this can help them grow!

Students are continuing to build their place value and fact family knowledge in Maths this term. We have learnt many ways to work out word problems including the CUBES strategy we have learnt this term – ask your child what CUBES means! We have also been using our mini whiteboards to assist us in our learning. This term students have learnt different ways to represent numbers using multiplication and division such as arrays and repeated addition.
