Year 1

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back to Term 3 Week and what a busy start to the Term it has been. There are many exciting events this Term - Catholic Education Week, School Dance, Book  Week and Father’s Day.

Last week we had Northern Pride visit the students of St. Joseph’s Weipa and talk about the importance of the St. Joseph’s 4 R’s - Being Respectful, Being Responsible, Being Resilient and Being Ready for Learning. We also as a school went onto the Oval and competed some Drills and Skills with the players. Thank you Carl, Terrance and Lovey for the posters and prizes and great morning.

On Thursday, we had an elite Australian Athlete visit us for a sprinting workshop. The students enjoyed meeting Jack Hale and hearing his story to success. Year 1 played games and asked great questions. It was wonderful to have Rio Tinto’s Atheletics from the Outback visit us.

Religion

This week in Religion we have been focussing on ways to pray. We have been looking at the sign of the cross as a way of preparing for prayer and ensuring we are using the correct hand and order. We have also been looking at different scripture passages which talk about they ways that Jesus prayed. So far we know that he prayed with his disciples and on his own, he prayed to God and sometimes he knelt when he prayed. Year 1 have been improving in their reverence and respect shown during prayer time.

Health

This week in Health we have been learning about Emotions: The students have been identifying different Emotions and how they make us feel and how these feelings can be shown in our body language. We have also made connections between sensory information and emotions and role-played responses to different emotions.

Maths

In Mathematics this week we have continued to learn about groups and sharing. The children have been working very hard on solving problems using concrete materials and recording their answers.
