Learning Support News
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to Week 6, how the Term is flying. It is another very busy and exciting week with our Starry Starry night Concert this Friday and Josh Arnold visiting St. Joseph’s, Weipa this week.
Personalised Learning Plans (PLPs)
The teachers are in the process of writing Personalised Learning Plans (PLPs) and will be meeting with Parents over the next few weeks. Personalised learning is a process that supports a wide range of students with additional learning and support needs. This includes students who may require support in one or more of the following areas: learning (including high potential learners), behaviour, social/emotional, cultural/language (including international students, boarders and learners of English as an Additional Language or Dialect) and those who have educational support needs arising from disability. Teachers, with the support of the Leader of Diversity, and in consultation with parents, collaboratively decide which adjustments and/or goals are to be targeted and determine appropriate strategies and supports to be implemented. It is the teacher’s responsibility to implement these planned strategies in order to support students to meet their goals. Teachers will direct School Officer support and plan for adjustments on a weekly basis. Teachers communicate weekly with School Officers regarding student progress and make adjustments as needed. Evidence is collected regularly and uploaded to ENGAGE. PLP meetings are set 6 monthly and will determine if current goals have been achieved before setting further goals.
Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum
This term in Health the school is implementing the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum for students all grades, Prep – Year 6. This curriculum is based on the principles of best practice in child safety education and centres around three key messages: Recognise, React and Report. A collaborative approach between schools, families and the community is the best way to provide safety education to children. Information about the Daniel Morcombe child Safety Curriculum can be found at www.education.qld.gov.au/child-safety-curriculum.
Respectful Relationships Program
Last week Tosca Grainger - Dee our School Counsellor visited us again in Weipa providing her service to St. Joseph's School and the students in Year 5 and 6 participated in the Respectful Relationships Educational Program.
The Respectful Relationships Program facilitators were Tosca Grainger Dee (Counsellor), Hannah Chapman (Manager of Counselling and Psychology) and Ann Barr (Student Protection Officer) and teaching staff were also present during the sessions.
The program aims to provide a safe environment in which Year 5 and 6 students can discuss and learn about their rights and responsibilities in relationships and look at ways to access support when needed. During the sessions, the students are encouraged to support their friends by utilising safe, healthy and proactive strategies.
